Satellite TV in Spain

The TV channels available in Spain are pretty dismal (even if you speak the lingo!).  To make life tolerable the only sensible thing to do (if only to keep up with home and world news), is to install a SKY digital satellite system.  This consists of:

bullet

A SUITABLE digibox or digital receiver

bullet

A suitable LARGE parabolic dish - what size?

bullet

An LNB* - (- Low Noise Block -)

bullet

A viewing card(if needed)

*(LNB  needed to 'focus' & amplify the satellite beam, which is transmitted from an ASTRA satellite around 23,000 miles or 37,000 kms AWAY!)

Depending on:

  1. Where you eventually settle, and

  2. How much you are prepared to pay, (both in subscriptions to SKY, and installation costs) , you will be able to view a differing number of the 'several hundred'  channels available on the SKY system.

If you have a SKY contract in the UK, you could simply unplug the digibox bit, stick it in your hand luggage, and bring it to Spain.

Strictly speaking - if it was installed for free, or on one of the reduce price options, or still under a 'SKY Contract' - you shouldn't take it out of the country, and if it is still in the first year of the contract, it should be attached to a UK telephone line - (difficult if you are living on the Costa Brava!!).

However, if you bought it outright, - well it's yours, and  up to you!

There are a number of suppliers in Spain (Mostly advertising in the free 'Brit' press), who will provide you with either a full system, or just a dish and LNB to connect to 'your' digibox.  Some will even organise a viewing card for you, which can be useful if you haven't got a UK address

The cost of a 'full' system varies, depending on who you deal with, and the digibox and size of dish supplied.  Some boxes work better than others, and you will definitely need a larger dish than the 44cm one supplied with the SKY box. (Click here to see dish sizes needed)

NOT ALL Digiboxes are suitable for use in Spain,  and if you plan to reside in southern Spain, a dish of at least 1 metre, or bigger is necessary if you want to receive most of the channels across.

I know someone who uses a BOX with a 1.3m dish, and they get  ALL the 60 channels (see across), which are 'free of subscription'!

The cheapest new systems bought and installed in Spain, start at around 600 Euros (420 quid approx.), and go up to over 1000 Euros for 'fully loaded system'.

So you really 'pays your money and makes your choice' when it comes to SAT TV.

unless  . . . .

For those of you that are interested in maybe trying a half way house, there a number of second user 'out of contract' boxes with remotes from the UK available (see across).

These used boxes are less expensive than new, but usually come with a minimum 3 month warranty, remote control, all the connecting cables, and in some cases (if you're lucky!), a current FTV viewing card.  All can be collected locally, and CAN be seen working.

These second user boxes,  are IDEAL for those of you living in communities with communal shared dishes already in-situ.  In many cases, you just need to plug the box in, connect to your TV (or viewing device), and connect the communal coax lead, so from around £130 (or the Euro equivalent), for a used box, remotes and cables, you are in business.  Even if you don't have a pre-existing dish installed, you can get a 1.3m dish & LNB installed and lined up to your box for around £200, or if you are handy, buy a suitable dish from Satcure, and get it shipped to Spain to fit yourself - so you can still SAVE  upwards of £100!

If you prefer new, - there are a number of new boxes available that offer perfect reception for most, if not all of southern Spain, using the standard community fitted 1.3m dish, and can be obtained to order at current retail prices.
